Calling in sick with a case of the Mondays: Do Mondays make people ill?

In 2009, consultant firm Mercer found that nearly 35 percent of all sick-leave is taken on Mondays, with attendance slowly increasing as the week progresses. After surveying over 11,000 UK employee records, the most common reasons for missing work were musculoskeletal problems, virus infections and stress-related illnesses.

When the BBC initially reported these findings, University of Lancaster professor Cary Cooper speculated that, "people are lying about their reason for sickness absence," as a way to get an additional day of rest and recuperation. "Some employees may feel the weekend is not enough so they take the extra day," he said.

Data recently published by GermTrax.com, a website that tracks real-time sickness trends via social media reports, supports Mercer's claims. According to the site, Monday is indeed the "sickest" day of the week – meaning that Monday is consistently the day with the highest number of self-reported sicknesses.
